Report

Puskas-Hagi, named after the greatest Hungarian & Romanian players ever, respectively, became the third Romanian-Hungarian team to win the AUL Futsal League title in 3 years. They finished two points ahead of Blue Magic, another Romanian team in second place.

In all, there was a drop of one team on the previous season, with Dublin City Futsal, Futsamba Naas, Bohemian AFC and Blue Magic 2nds replacing Romstar Inter, FC Transylvania, Clontarf Vikings, Irish Vikings and Saints & Scholars in the League.

About

The Athletic Union League, the main Soccer League Association in Dublin, took over the running of the Emerald Futsal League in 2015. Futsal is a 5-a-side version of Soccer played indoors on the same court as an Olympic Handball court, with lines denoting out of bounds rather than walls as in Indoor Soccer, and the aim is to pass the ball into a semi-circle surrounding the goal, where the attacking team may shoot and score.

A New Era for Australian Rules in Ireland dawned in 2018 with a rebranding to Australian Football League Ireland and the first full Women’s League Season.

The Men’s 2018 Premiership was won by Belfast Redbacks with a 100% record, and they went on to win the Grand Final in style against the Galway Magpies 9.14.68 to 3.11.29 [14]

The Redbacks were only really troubled in Round 2 (winning 39-37 against the ‘Pies) and Round 4 (a close 34-33 encounter with the South Dublin Swans.

The Leeside Lions from Cork had stared strongly, winning both their Round 1 games, as did Belfast, but fell away after that as Galway mounted a late challenge, going 3-1 in their last four matches after a 1-4 start, before beating Leeside in the Semi-Final 41-16. [13]

The Season, however, belonged to the Redbacks who won the Final comfortably against the Magpies, to record their third Grand Final Victory. [14]

The first full season of Womens Australian Football in Ireland was played in 2018, over four rounds in a carnival format, with West Clare Waves showing why they are European Champions by winning the title with 13 wins from 15 games.

The First round featured West Clare, Dublin Angels, UCC Crusaders, Portadown Power and North East Kookaburras. North East Kookaburras set the early pace with 3 wins from 3, with West Clare Waves picking up 2 wins from their three matches.

Round 2 featured  the original five teams, plus Galway Magpies, with UCC Crusaders renamed Cork Vikings. The Kookaburras again won all 3 matches to go 6-0, but this was the last Round they played in. West Clare established themselves, only losing to the Kookaburras for the second round running.

Round 3 in Islandbridge, Dublin, saw West Clare waves winning all four matches, with Portadown Power  posting a 1-1-1 record for the round  and Dublin Angels gaining one draw from their four matches, following a draw between the teams. They were the only three teams in the round.

Round 4 saw 5 teams enter with West Clare Waves again going 4-0 to win the title, Portadown Power and Cork Vikings coming in second and third. Newcomers Portlaoise Pixies managed a win against Dublin Angels to lift them above Galway in the Final Table. Dublin Angels finished in mid-table with two wins and a draw, just above North East Kookaburras.
