San Francisco Demons vs Las Vegas Outlaws

Two weeks prior to this match Quarterback Mark Grieb was a Masters Student at Stanford University in Northern California. Before signing for the Las Vegas Outlaws he asked his department if he could still complete the quarter and play for the Outlaws at the same time.

They gave him their blessing and he fired a 41 yard swing pass to Mark Furrey to give Las Vegas a 13-9 lead in the third quarter – a lead they would not give up as they moved to 3-1 at sole ownership of first place in the West Conference.

San Francisco had taken the lead on Mike Pawlawski’s 13 yard pass to Brandin Young in the second quarter. Rod Smart, better known for the nickname written across the back of his jersey in place of his name: “He Hate Me”, equalised for Las Vegas with a three yard run, but just before halftime Mike Panacuk made it 9-6 to the Demons with a 36 yard Field Goal.

The Outlaws finished off the scoring in the fourth quarter with Paul McCallum’s 43 yard Field Goal. The game finished San Francisco Demons 6 Orlando Rage 13. Mark Grieb, who played under Rage Coach Jim Criner at Scotland Claymores in the National Football League Europe League, went 11 of 23 for 105 yards. Mike Pawlawski completed 25 of 35 passes for 225 yards for the Demons.

Chicago Enforcers vs NY/NJ Hitmen

American Football XFL-style made its debut in Soldier Field in Chicago in freezing temperatures and drizzle on Saturday the 24th of February 2001, with only 14,856 to watch the match-up of the two winless teams after the first three weeks and it was New York / New Jersey Hitmen who went home the happiest, winning 13-0 thanks to two Leo Araguz Field Goals in the first and fourth quarters, and Joe Aska’s 1 yard run in the second.

The Hitmen survived a last-second second quarter threat to keep the 3-0 lead at halftime. Fans opinions were divided. One Chicago fan thought the Enforcers “stank” like the Bears while another thought there was nothing better than going to a Football game in Winter and having a beer and hotdog.

Although the game was tight at 0-0 after the first quarter, It was broken open in gthe second when Bill Duff returned a fumble by ex-Barcelona Dragons Quarterback Casey Weldon 48 yards to the endzone to give Orlando a 14-0 lead after Jeff Brohm had given them a 7-0 lead with a 12 yard touchdown pass to Brian Shay.

The third quarter again saw no scoring before Derrick Clark’s 9 yard run capped off a 76 yard drive which saw Shay make 53 yards on three carries and a reception. Birmingham hit back with their first touchdown of the game, a 36 yard touchdown pass from Weldon to Quincey Jackson, but their onside kick was returned 42 yards to the endzone by the Rage’s Mario Bailey for the final score of the game. Birmingham Bolts vs Chicago Enforcers

Duane Butler scored on a timely 98 yard Interception Return with less than two minutes remaining to give Birmingham Bolts a 14-3 victory over Chicago Enforcers in less than 40 degree temperatures (fahrenheit) which left the attendance at 17,582, down almost 20,000 on the Bolts home opener where over 30,000 attended.

Birmingham’s other touchdown was a 2 yard run by James Bostic with 1:36 left in the first half, and meant they led the Enforcers by less than a touchdown following Chicago’s Field Goal. With Chicago pushing for the winner, the Interception was crucial for Birmingham.

Mistakes were the hallmark of the game, Chicago giving up three turnovers in total, all three in Birmingham territory, including one by leading rusher John Avery who had 96 yards on the day. Chicago were limited to 164 total yards by the Bolts defense, their sole score coming in the first half with Andy Crossland’s 33 yard Field Goal.

Linebacker James Willis of Birmingham, the leagues leading tackler, had 11 tackles on the night. Bostic had 82 yards on 23 carries and QB Casey Weldon completed 16 of 27 passes for 152 yards.

The win left Birmingham on 2-1 and second in the East Conference, and dropped Chicago Enforcers to 0-3, the only winless team in the XFL after week 3.

vs vs vs

NY/NJ Hitmen vs Orlando Rage

The announced crowd of 25,626, perhaps really only 20,000, came alive in the second half as exciting football kept them in Giants Stadium in New Jersey despite 30-degree fahrenheit temperatures and a wind chill factor of 8, when the previous week the dull football failed to keep them in the stadium even with the extra specatcle of fireworks, gyrating cheerleaders and microphones on the players so fans could hear everything.

The Hitmen and Rage traded Field Goals in the first half, leaving the score 3-3, but in the second half the Hitmen took a 12-3 lead with a second Leo Araguz Field Goal and a Marcus Hinton reception from former London Monarchs player Wally Richardson, which he took in for a 20 yard touchdown.

With the Hitmen 12-3 up, Orlando showed they were no sunny weather team as they brought the game back to within one touchdown on Jay Taylor’s second Field Goal, set up by a 42 yard reception by ex-Rhen Fire receiver Dialleo Burks.

Burks later caught another reception and made it to the one yard line before Derrick Clark, who also played with former Rhein Fire coach Galen Hall, now Orlando’s Head Coach, went in for the touchdown to tie the match.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Brohm then scrambled 33 yards up the middle to score the game-winning touchdown with 2;33 remaining, juking three defenders in the process to send the visiting Rage fans wild. The Final Score was 18-12 to Orlando, leaving them the only undefeated team on 3-0 and dropping New York / New Jersey Hitmen to 0-3.

Los Angeles Xtreme vs Las Vegas Outlaws

Jose Cortes scored four Field Goals in this low-scoring game as the Los Angeles Xtreme defeated Las Vegas Outlaws 12-9 to join them on 2-1 at the top of the West Conference.

Cortez connected on Field Goals of 45, 44 and 36 yards before Xtreme’s Safety Tinker Keck intercepted Outlaws Quarterback Mike Cawley and returned the ball to the Las Vegas 41 yard line to set up Cortez’s game-winning 48yd Field Goal with 1:11 left to play.

The Xtreme sacked Mike Cawley seven times during the game. Cawley was the Outlaws back-up quarterback, playing in place of injured starter Ryan Clement. The Outlaws defense meanwhile kept them in the game, limiting the Xtreme Offense to 186 yards in total. The Outlaws were coached by former Scottish Claymores coach Jim Criner and had allowed only 3 points in their first two games.

The game was played before a crowd of 26,135 and finished Los Angeles Xtreme 12 Las Vegas Outlaws 9

San Francisco Demons vs Memphis Maniax

Memphis Maniax failed to find the endzone for the second game in a row, losing 6-13 to San Francisco Demons despite two Jeff Hall Field Goals in the first half which left them 6-0 up at halftime.

NY/NJ Hitmen vs Birmingham Bolts

Winter closed in on New Jersey as temperatures dropped and a 22 mph wind which made it freezing and feel like 6 degrees fahrenheit were the talking points of as game that was won by Keith Franklin’s 12 yard Fumble Return for a touchdown with 3:32 left.

Errors were the main aspect of a game which featured five turnovers on interceptions or fumbles, with New York / New Jersey scoring on Mike Archie’s one yard run after Casey Weldon threw an interception on the Bolts opening drive. The next Hitman series was halted after Duane Butler, the former London Monarchs cornerback stripped Hitmen halfback Keith Elias of the ball on the five yard line. It was probably the most important play of the game.

The fans left early, with only 5,000 at the fulltime whistle as the cheeleaders, in white halter tops, pinstripe hot pants and full-length leather coats, opened most of the time, continued to brave the weather along with the players, who complained that the playing surface was like ice.

Stepfret Williams was the Bolts star, setting up a seven yard touchdown from Weldon to Quincy Jackson in the second quarter with a 70 yard reception, and returning a punt 95 yards for a touchdown later in the third quarter. These touchdowns were followed by Mike Archie’s second one yard touchdown run, bringing the Hitmen to within one point, but their comeback was halted by Franklin’s fumble return for touchdown and then on the final drive of the night Chris Puleri’s fourth and 14 pass from the Birmingham 19 yard line fell incomplete in the endzone.

Fans thought the football was lacking despite the entertainment offered and with the wind chill and the attendance dropped as much as the temperature as 36,458 fans at kickoff fell to 5,000 at the end. Vince McMahon, owner of the World Wrestling Federation, joint owners of the XFL with broadcaster NBC, had to admit the league was a “work in progress”.
