Season: Regular Season 2001

Memphis Maniax vs Las Vegas Outlaws

Two long Fumble Recovery Returns were the highlight of this game as the Las Vegas Outlaws improved to 2-0 and the Memphis Maniax dropped to 1-1. Jason Kaiser returned one 80 yards to give Las Vegas a 9-3 lead early in the second quarter after a bad handoff by Beau Morgan. The Outlaws and Maniax had traded Field Goals in the first quarter.

1994 Heisman Trophy-winner Rashaan Salaam appeared to have given Memphis an equalizing touchdown, with an 8-yard run, however, he fumbled at the goalline and Kurt Gouveia picked up the ball and returned it the length of the field. Chrys Chukwuma added a nine-yard touchdown in the third quarter, before Paul McCallum scored two more Field Goals bringing his total for the game to three.

vs vs vs

Los Angeles Xtreme vs Chicago Enforcers

Former UCLA Quarterback Tommy Maddox threw four touchdowns, one the game-winning 20yard pass to Darnell McDonald in overtime for the win as the Los Angeles Xtreme came from 26-14 down at halftime to win 39-32.

The game was played before 35,813 fans at the LA Coliseum, former home of the LA Raiders who had moved back to Oakland and many of the fans were wearing Raiders gear. The spectacle again competed for fans attention with the football, one fan holding a sign saying “I’m only here for the cheerleaders” and the usual fireworks, as well as hot-tub with bikini-clad women, a party tent and a lifeguard stand on sand. The fans were rowdy and loud, like the blaring music and threw beer cans, toilet roll and food at a lone Chicago Enforcers fan in the away section, who seemed unfazed.

The WWF and NBC claimed another ratings victory despite the truck housing the generator losing power in the first quarter and NBC switching its footage to the game in Orlando before it regained power and TV footage switched back.

The scoring was opened by Tommy Maddox after he ran in from one yard out, following Rashan Sheehee’s 3yard run which was just short of the goalline, which had the crowd, announcer, fireworks and blaring music in celebratory mode. It was fitting that “First Down” Newspaper did little to report the game itself in between the opeing and closing Touchdowns as even the fans themselves seemed more interested in the party tent, hot tub, fireworks and beer.

vs vs vs

Orlando Rage vs San Francisco Demons

Orlando Rage defeated San Francisco Demons before a smaller crowd than the previous week at the Florida Citrus Bowl, almost 11,500 down to 25,049 fans. The fans, however, were no less appreciative of the show, seemingly once again more entertained by the spectacle of fireworks, dancing cheerleaders and loud music than the football.

Jeff Broum completed 10 of 21 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown as Orlando came from 7-0 down in the first quarter to win 26-14. Mike Pawlawski’s short pass to Brian Roche opened the scoring in the first quarter as the Demons Quarterback went 36 of 52 for 294 yards and two Touchdowns, however, it was the Rage’s running game which won the game for them.

Jeff Broum found Mario Bailey on a 49 yard scoring play, and Omar Brown added a 20 yard fumble return before Orlando’s running game opened up the match with Touchdowns either side of halftime from Brian Shay and Derrick Clark. San Francisco scored their second touchdown of the game late in the third quarter when Jimmy Cunningham caught an 11 yard pass from Pawlawski, but the final quarter was scoreless to leave the result Orlando Rage 26 San Francisco Demons 14.

Even though the National Broadcasting Corporation and the World Wrestling Federation, joint owners of the new league were calling the second week another success, there were notable gaps in the seating unlike the previous week when Orlando official’s claimed thousands were turned away because the Upper Deck of the Citrus Bowl was unavaible for XFL games. The football did not match the spectacle with 20 penalties called against the teams in total and the play was ragged.

vs vs vs

San Francisco Demons vs Los Angeles Xtreme

Mike Pawlawski went 31 of 47 for 289 yards and two Touchdown Passes as San Francisco Demons opened the first ever XFL season at Pacific Bell Park in the Golden Gate City with a 15-10 defeat of Los Angeles Xtreme. Los Angeles Xtreme’s Brian Robertson had 12 catches for 127 yards, but fumbled the ball late in the fourth quarter to set up Mike Panacuk’s game winning Field Goal.

The Game was played in front of World Wrestling Federation Owner Vince McMahon who had paid to set up the League in conjunction with the National Broadcasting Corporation which had lost the rights to show the National Football League, while McMahon had been refused ownership of a Canadian Football League franchise.

What the game was more talked about other than the WWF connections and scantily-clad cheerleaders, was the opening kickoff, which rather than a coin toss to decide who would kickoff featured a 20-yard dash to the centre of the field by a player for each side, the first of whom to reach the ball and gain control of it would win possession. The first attempt in this game resulted in a season-ending shoulder injury to one of the players and the gimmick was shelved from the rest of the season.
